Studying performing arts is not easy and whilst the time which I spent at the American Muscial and Dramatical Academy was absolutely brilliant, it wasn’t always easy. If you love performing arts and you want to study at college then I have some words of advice for you on how to get the most out of this experience. Some people will get through the course but never be able to make it in the world of performing arts, at least not at the level which they would like, if you don’t want to do that then this is the attitude which you need to have.
Commitment
The first point which I want to make is that you have to be absolutely committed to this course, i you are not then you will not make it. I saw so many students dropping out after the first year or two and this was because they just weren’t committed enough to make a go of it. Before you even enroll ask yourself what you are willing to give in order to successfully study performing arts.
Teachers
I can’t speak for every college but the professors at AMDA were absolutely sensational, not only were they great teachers but they have all had wonderful careers in the arts. I made a decision from an early stage that I would take whatever they said as gospel and I would always work as hard as possible to meet the high standards which they had set for us all. The teachers we worked with had experience in working with some of the best in the industry and if you can do all that you can to suck as much information out of them as possible, you will go a long way in achieving what it is that you want.
Keep Getting Up
Regardless of your ability in whichever discipline of the arts which you’ve chosen, you will not have an easy ride when you get to a performing arts academy. In fact you should expect to get knocked down a lot of times, the key is that you have to keep on getting back up. During my time at AMDA there were auditions which I didn’t get, pieces of work which I’d put my heart and soul into that weren’t deemed good enough and so much hard work which never got me the results that I want. Everyone will get knocked down, you just have to keep on getting back up and pushing on.
Social Scene
The social scene wasn’t as active as some of the colleges that my friends went to but that made no difference to me and it shouldn’t to you either. If you want to get the most out of this experience then you need to place all of your efforts, energy and focus on your studies, and not the social side of going to college. I saw people who had this the wrong way around and as you can imagine, it didn’t bode well for them.
