Contrary to popular belief renovating your garden doesn’t have to cost the Earth and there are a number of hacks which you can apply with ease to your garden to give it a fresh new look. I first moved to Alberta, Canada from the USA 3 years ago and after renovating the house we went to lender to get some money for the garden. I had signed all of the paperwork, the fraud protection stuff, signed off the interest rates etc. and then I had a chance meeting with my new neighbor Travis Cadman. It tuned out Travis was a gardener and he offered me a few tips on giving my garden a budget renovation. I cancelled the credit agreement and got started, and now the garden looks great.
Clean Up
One of the most important jobs which you can do in the garden is simply to give it a really good clean up. Along with some very friendly neighborly help Travis and I spent over a week cleaning up the garden, getting rid of trash, digging up weeds and moss and power spraying the paving stones. I couldn’t believe the difference after just a week and the garden completely changed from a mess to something rather beautiful.
Free Standing
Nether my wife or myself enjoy spending a lot of time in the garden and whilst we did want plants in there we knew that if we put some bedding in then it would only get overrun with weeds. On the suggestion of Travis we started to buy freestanding pots for our plants and we decided to go one step further and find quirky vessels to put them in. Now we have sunflowers in a wellington boot, roses in an old cooking cauldron and even some small bedding plants in an old briefcase. Easy to manage and cool to look at.
Pallet Decking
We really wanted some decking in the garden to provide us with a place to enjoy a glass of wine in the sunshine yet decking is an expensive installation in the garden. Pallets came to our rescue here and after acquiring some for a very low cost from a local warehouse, we sanded them down treated and painted them before laying them at the back of the garden. These pallets look just like decking and they are sturdy secure and most importantly, very cheap to obtain.
Metal
A great hack to add something different to your garden is to put metal antiques in there, anything from old bikes to sewing machines and even some pots and pans. The effect f this looks so cool.
Househunters love homes with gardens which have been cleaned up and renovated and you can even add some value to your home if you can spare some time and a little money to give you garden a new makeover. It doesn’t have to be expensive, just well thought out.
