I have always loved the street food which you can find in Mexico, particularly in Mexico City where I have spent a great amount of time. I have to say that I have tried just about every snack that there is to offer and I am going to share my favorites with you today. Mexico is full of options when it comes to street cuisine and if you find a good stall then I suggest you stay with it, as the good ones are tough to find sometimes.
When you hit the streets, here are the tastiest snacks to try.
Quesadillas
Quesadillas are made using corn dough which is pressed into a long disc shape, and then filled up with whatever you feel like. Contrary to what many think, you actually have to ask for cheese as the dish doesn’t come with it. There are some delicious fillings which you can try and my favorite has to be huitlacoche. This is actually part of a disease piece of corn, which grows fungus on the bottom. Instead of throwing the fungus away, they cook it up and it tastes absolutely delicious.
Huarache
The huarache is more akin to a pizza than anything else and they taste delicious when you are really hungry. Again this uses corn dough which is spread out to the size of a small pizza. To dress the huarache they will add beans, lettuce, cream and then the topping of your choice, followed by plenty of crumbly white cheese. Add your own salsa to the top and enjoy. My preferred favorite here is beef.
Gorditas
My friend Rose Burillo adores these gorditas, which are small discs made from corn which are deep fried to give them a really crispy and crunchy outer layer. The gordita is sliced in half and filled with a range of toppings, as well as beans and some lettuce to give some added crunch and freshness. The corn dough is actually mixed with pork rind before it is cooked which gives it a great flavor profile and really leaves a delicious taste in your mouth.
Tacos
The ultimate street snack is of course tacos, they are found everywhere and there are so many different kinds that they deserve an article all by themselves. Needless to say that when you are on the streets of Mexico, these little beauties are the best snacks which you can buy.
Sweetcorn
Sometimes it is the simple things which taste the best and that is certainly the case when it comes to sweetcorn.Usually sold in the evenings you can either get a full corn which is prepared, or buy a small cup of corn. I prefer a cup of corn and they love to add mayonnaise to the top, as well as some spicy chili powder and plenty of lime juice. This is found throughout Mexico and it is both super cheap and super delicious.
These are certainly my favorite snacks which you can find on the streets of Mexico.
