A lady’s wardrobe will never be called complete without a dozen dresses. Dresses are perhaps the most iconic of all articles of female clothing; they come in different styles suited for different occasions and different body types. Let’s face it, ladies, we come in different shapes and sizes, all of which are beautiful. What is not fair, however, are ill-fitting dresses. It will be a grave faux pas to wear clothing that does not suit your body. Hence we at Miamasvin have compiled a list of the most common body types and the styles suited for each body type.
Slender.
This body type is generally willowy. The measurements of the shoulders and hips are roughly the same and coincide with a waistline of little definition; hence an often used epithet for this body shape is “Rectangle” To create the illusion of curves, choose gowns with trumpet or mermaid skirts, and with tops that add volume to the chest area, such as a ruffled bustline or flounced off-shoulder. You may also choose to show off your natural shape, do this with a fitted dress.
Hourglass.
Also known as figure 8. This body type is characterized by hips and bust that are equal or near equal in proportion, with a narrow waistline. The goal is not to create any illusions, but to accentuate the natural shape. Peplum gowns are perfect, as are V-neck dresses with mermaid skirts.
Busty
Also called the inverted triangle, this body type has a slim hip paired with a fuller chest area. The goal is to balance out your figure to get an hourglass look. As such, you should avoid dresses with ruffles or accents on the bodice as they add volume to an already busty chest. Instead, redirect volume to your hips, you can achieve this with gowns having high necklines and fuller skirts. Also to avoid are short dresses and strapless gowns that call attention to the chest.
Pear
The pear body shape is the reverse of busty. To balance such a body type and achieve the hourglass look, you should do the exact opposite of what is advised above viz; avoid gowns with voluminous skirts, choose dresses with accented bodices.
Invest also in lengthy dresses with an off-the-shoulder or cold-shoulder neckline that will emphasize your shoulders, or an illusion dress to accentuate your chest area.
Apple
The apple is defined by shoulders that are either broader than or the same size as the hips. It has a less defined waistline. The best dress for this body type is one that appears to elongate the torso, with a skirt that balances the bust. A sleeveless dress has a plunging neckline, and an A-line cut will look excellent on an apple body.
Petite
If you stand at the height of 5’3 (160 centimeters) or less, then you are petit. The goal is to appear as tall as possible without having to resort to wearing heels. You should avoid ball gowns and full-length dresses, short dresses that reveal a lot of legs are the way to go, as they give the illusion of height. Asymmetric hemlines, pleats and vertical prints are also a great look for a petite body.
Conclusion
Pear or Apple, rectangle or triangle, whichever type you are, Miamasvin has got beautiful dresses for you.
